Born to Lose Burger Kitchen and Brew York Beer Hall, York | Travels

Our friend who’s recently moved to York discovered the Brew York Taproom over summer. That was when he discovered the Beer Hall was to ope. On our visit he took us there not only to sample the beers, but to try the infamous Born to Lose Burger Kitchen. Given it was a grey and cold day in York, this was the perfect lunchtime activity for four beer and food obsessed friends.

First up the beer, now the Beer Hall is an epic space. The bar has 60 taps and then there’s a huge fridge and other options. I was on the beer, but if you’re not a fan there’s ciders and gins. Unsure if there’s wine. But if you go to a beer hall expecting wine you may need to rethink your drink choices (Post publish edit – there is wine, but honestly go and try the beer). I was thoroughly impressed with the selection of Brew York beers, but also guest beers on tap. I am going through a sour beers phase at the moment, heading straight for the Brew York Kylie Gose Lassi, which is an incredibly fruity sour beer, absolutely delicious. There was also a guest beer of Lervig’s Passion Tang, which is another firm favourite of mine.

After a couple of beers it was time to order food. I didn’t manage to get a pic of everyone’s burgers so I will share Dr W’s and mine. I ordered the BTC Burger (left), this was incredible, cooked pink, so if you don’t like that tell them. It came with home cured spiced bacon, which was the bomb and an incredible red eye espresso mayo and parmesan/white truffle shavings. Now I’m known for not finishing burger buns if I find them too heavy. But this brioche was incredible. Dr W ordered the Cornflake Fried Chicken (right) with hot sauce and kimchi. He did enjoy it, but I think he was jealous of my ridiculous burger in the end.

To be honest we probably should’ve only ordered one tray of fries with all of the epic burgery goodness but we are greedy so-and-so’s. However, with the epic fries menu could not be ignored. Our friends picked the Rare Beef Steak Fries, which had jalapenos and the most delicious dressing. The steak was perfectly cooked FYI. Whereas Dr W and I went with the very messy Red Eye Beef Shin Fries. We definitely won on the fries, although I kept nicking the jalapenos off my mates fries as a bit of heat went well with the beef shin. We finished our incredible meal having to roll out of the beer hall (via the tap room downstairs for a cheeky half) and walked off our dinner whilst wandering back to our mates house.

Please note: Just to warn you readers, Born to Lose Burger Kitchen like to change up their menu quite frequently. These bad boys we tried may not be there when you visit, but I assure you the food is incredible. They source their ingredients locally and cook everything to order, so go and support them!
