5 Adventures in to go on in the Lake District | Travel

We’ve recently returned from a week away in our favourite place, the Lake District. Home to some amazing mountains and lovely eateries, so today I’m sharing my 5 adventures in the Lake District.

#1 – Go for a Hike

Well duh! The obvious one right? But you don’t need to go hunting for full on winter conditions on Fairfield to enjoy the mountains of the Lake District. How about the circular walk to Rydal Hall then around Rydal and Grasmere Water starting from/finishing at Grasmere. Or an easy lower level hike like Helm Crag or Catbells. Both of these hikes offer amazing views throughout valleys. But if an epic is your kind of thing, then definitely give the Fairfield Horseshoe a go. Don’t forget your map and compass though! Just a reminder, the weather really has changed. Even the simplest hike could become tricky. I shared some winter hiking tips the other year, that are still very relevant!

#2 – Enjoy a Chippy Tea

An absolute must for the Lakes I feel, or maybe just the north in general? On our arrival on a staycation we usually sort an easy tea and the chippy is a good place to start. If you’re in the Lakes I can really recommend the Walnut in Ambleside. I went with a battered sausage, but the fish is equally as good. The homemade curry sauce is wicked and the chips are super tasty. Basically go there.

#3 – Visit the Hawkshead Brewery

A huge fan of Hawkshead Beer already, we just had to pop into their brewery and shop on the way to the cottage. We of course had to stop for lunch once we saw their menu. I enjoyed a halloumi burger and Dr W had the schnitzel. I did catch a poster for their brewery tour, but sadly we didn’t get a chance to go during this trip. It’s on the list for our next one though!

#4 – Explore Whinlatter Forest

The weather up high wasn’t so great on one of the days, so we decided to keep to a slightly lower level. Don’t get me wrong, it’s very obvious that Whinlatter is on the side of the Coledale Horseshoe. We decided to do 2 smaller wainwrights right behind the forest rather than embarking on anything in the clouds. It was a windy walk, but we had some beautiful views down the valley. We were well and truly spoilt by staying at a lower level. If you didn’t want to go up a mountain, the forest park has some wonderfully well marked footpaths to walk on.

#5 – Go for Dinner at Tweedies in Grasmere

We discovered Tweedies a couple of years ago when staying in Grasmere. Their food is very good and the bar has an epic beer selection. There’s other options too if beer is not your thing. The food at Tweedies is sourced locally where possible and is seriously tasty. The service is fab… We ate there three times last week (says it all right?) The picture above was the gradvalax. However, if you fancy checking them out soon, they’ve just released their winter menu. Be sure to book if going on a Friday or Saturday, it gets unbelievably busy!
